Book 101 Science Fiction Short Stories Review :

I have dutifully learned that once one buys this kind of compendium, one is liable to get immersed in dated, naive, trite, and plain stupid stories. If one discards the obvious misreadings of the future (which is often NOW!), like everybody smoking, recordings on reel tapes, computer input/output on perforated cards, some as big as a whole room (!), sexist innuendos, etc, etc, one can find a few nuggets in this swirling pan of mud. This one was a pleasant surprise. First of all, mercifully short, ONLY 1560 pages (!) and an amazing proportion of silver and gold nuggets, and an occasional diamond too. So, as a service to the faithful and nostalgic reader, here are those 39 (38%!) deserving honorable mention, at least conforming to my admittedly superb taste in SF1. The Abandoned of Yan - by Donald Daley. Excellent vision of dystopian future of marital partnership2. I, Executioner - by Ted White and Terry Carr. Chilling to the bone dystopian future society3. The Shipshape Miracle - by Clifford Simak. Cute4. This Way to the Egress - by Andrew Fetler. Would fit very well in the "Kiss, Kiss" collection by Roald Dahl5. Road Stop - by David Mason. An early warning about autonomous vehicles6. Too Many Eggs - by Kriss Nevill. An excellent analysis of a warehouse malfunction7. The 64-square Madhouse - by Fritz Leiber. Mediocre Leiber yet equals great writing for whoever moved a piece on the board, slightly dated after The Big Blue8. The Recruit - by Bryce Walton. A different spin on virtual reality9. All That Earthly Remains - by CC MacApp. Oh God-with a twist10. Gramp - by Charles De Vet. Excellent story about telepathy11. Misrule - by Robert Scott. Dystopian pressure valve story, very good12. Seven Day Terror - by R.A. Lafferty. One of the better tongue-in-cheek stories ever13. Dangerous Quarry - by Jim Harmon. Cute14. Tybalt - by Stephen Barr. Time travel and transmigration of souls, with a twist15. Call Him Nemesis - by Donald E Westlake. Very nice though long16. The Flying Tuskers of Kniik-Knaak - by Jack Sharkey. Nice paraphrase on the 'White Man's Burden' complex17. The Girls from Fieu Dayol - by Robert F. Young. Superb18. The Fastest Gun Dead - by Julian F. Grow. Wild West with a twist but rather weak ending19. Young Man from Elsewhen - by Sylvia Jacobs. A beautifully written take on old age20. February Strawberries - by Jim Harmon. Resurrection anyone?21. The Connoisseur - by Frank Banta. The bridewealth22. The Useless Bugbreeders - by James Stamers. A nice piece of SF humor, much missing lately23. Youth - by Isaac Asimov. As most Asimovs, somewhat corny, somewhat simplistic, bur enjoyable nevertheless24. A Little Journey - by Ray Bradbury. Not his best, but excellent nevertheless, even upon third reading25. Vassi - by Art Lewis. Ah, immortality! And so well written, a bit Katherine Porter26. Heel - by Philip Jose Farmer. "Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus". Delightful27. Thirty Degrees Cattywonkus - by James Bell. A bit too long, but a very good parallel worlds story28. Matchmaker - by Charles Fontenay. A matchmakers's lot is not an easy one30. The Wind People - by Marion Zimmer Bradley - Love and loneliness, written with a sensitive woman's touch31. Ignatz - by Ron Goulart. Try disturbing a set-up that makes everybody feel good32. The Little Red Bag - by Jerry Sohl. So very relevant nowadays33. The Autumn After Next - by Margaret St. Clair. No market for spells34. Summer Guests - by James H. Schmitz. Very well written account of what could happen to anyone35. Not Snow, Nor Rain - by Miriam Allen DeFord. Nothing can deflect a dedicated postman. Even retirement36. Virgin Ground - by Rosel George Brown. A great feminist story37. The Good Work - by Theodore L. Thomas. Very well written but for the predictable punchline38. Pipe Dream - by Fritz Leiber. Written after ingesting a mushroom or two. Crazy and beautiful39. All Cats Are Grey - by Andre Norton . Love stories never dieEnjoy
A very interesting collection of relatively short stories that can be read in a even shorter amount of time. You will recognize many of these authors by name… other stories may not be by famous names but quite good.
